Ocarina of Time Walkthrough

Quick Answer

Play the dungeons in this order: Inside the Deku Tree → Dodongo's Cavern → Jabu-Jabu's Belly → [draw the Master Sword] → Forest Temple → Fire Temple → Water Temple → Shadow Temple → Spirit Temple → Ganon's Castle. The first three are the child era; after the Master Sword you play as adult Link for the rest. There are 12 dungeons in all and the main quest runs about 25 hours.

Chapter-by-chapter route

The main quest is a fixed spine: three child-era dungeons to earn the Spiritual Stones, then the Master Sword, then five adult temples before Ganon's Castle. Each chapter below links to its boss strategy and, where a full temple guide exists, the dungeon page.

📝 Where the Master Sword splits the game

After Jabu-Jabu's Belly you place the three Spiritual Stones and draw the Master Sword in the Temple of Time. This warps you 7 years into the future as adult Link — the moment the game opens up into the five adult temples. You can later travel back and forth at the Pedestal of Time. See Time Travel for how it works.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the dungeon order in Ocarina of Time?
Inside the Deku Tree, Dodongo’s Cavern, Jabu-Jabu’s Belly (child era), then after the Master Sword: Forest Temple, Fire Temple, Water Temple, Shadow Temple, Spirit Temple, and finally Ganon’s Castle.
How long does Ocarina of Time take to beat?
The main quest is roughly 25 hours. A focused playthrough can be shorter; a 100% run with all heart pieces, Gold Skulltulas and side quests runs well over 40 hours.
Is the walkthrough the same on N64 and 3DS?
The dungeon order and bosses are identical across the N64 original and the 3DS remake. The 3DS version adds touch-screen item swapping, a tweaked Water Temple, and the harder Master Quest, but the route is the same.
Do I have to do the dungeons in order?
The three child dungeons and the adult temples are largely gated by the items and songs you earn, so the order above is the intended path. Forest is the first adult temple the game points you to after the Master Sword.
