Pieces split fairly evenly across the timeline: 12 are grabbed as child Link, 11 as an adult, and 13 are reachable in either era. A few — like the Lost Woods minigame and the Bombchu Bowling reward — are easiest as a child, so don't skip your kid years.

How are Heart Pieces different from boss Heart Containers?
Boss Heart Containers are the single, whole hearts awarded for defeating each dungeon boss. Heart Pieces are the quarter-hearts scattered across the overworld and side-quests — both raise your max health, but only the 36 pieces are tracked here.
Can I get Heart Pieces as a kid?
Yes — 12 of the 36 are child-only, and 13 more can be grabbed in either era. None are permanently missable, but several child-era pieces (Lost Woods, Bombchu Bowling, the spider-house) are far easier before you pull the Master Sword.
